The Big Six of Turkish Medical Tourism : Acıbadem, Memorial, MedicalPark, Medipol, Medicana and Dunyagoz

The Big Six of Turkish Medical Tourism: Acıbadem, Memorial, MedicalPark/MLP Care, Medipol, Medicana and Dunyagoz

Turkey’s medical tourism story is often told through hair transplant clinics, dental centers, plastic surgery practices and social media marketing. But behind the country’s global patient flow is a more institutional layer: large private hospital groups that combine international patient offices, multilingual teams, complex-care departments, overseas representatives and brand trust.

Among them, six names stand out: Acıbadem, Memorial, MedicalPark/MLP Care, Medipol, Medicana and Dünyagöz.

They are not identical. Acıbadem and Memorial are premium multi-specialty brands. MedicalPark is the high-volume public-facing brand under MLP Care, one of Turkey’s largest private hospital platforms. Medipol is a university-hospital challenger with strong complex-care positioning. Medicana is a large national private hospital group with growing international ambitions. Dünyagöz is different from all of them: it is a focused eye-care specialist, but by international patient volume it is one of the most important health tourism players in the country.

This article profiles the “Big Six” of Turkish medical tourism: their scale, international patient numbers, positioning, and what they reveal about the next stage of Turkey’s health tourism market.

Turkey’s health tourism market in context

Turkey remains one of the world’s busiest medical tourism destinations. According to sector and official reporting cited in Turkish media, Turkey received around 1.5 million health tourists in 2024, generating roughly $3 billion in health tourism revenue. In 2025, the number of foreign patients reportedly fell to around 1.39 million, while revenue remained close to $3.02 billion.

This is important because it shows two things at the same time. First, Turkey has built a very large international patient market. Second, the market is becoming more competitive and more sensitive to perception, trust, regulation, pricing and patient experience. Volume alone is no longer enough.

That is why the large hospital groups matter. They do not only compete for low-cost elective procedures. They compete for complex surgeries, oncology, transplantation, IVF, cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, diagnostics and premium international patient care.

Quick comparison: the Big Six

Hospital group Best-known brands Publicly available international patient number Core positioning
MedicalPark / MLP Care Medical Park, Liv Hospital, VM Medical Park Industry coverage cited 150,000+ international patients treated in the previous year; MLP Care also says it serves patients from 200+ countries Large-scale private hospital platform
Dunyagoz Dünyagöz Hospitals Group Around 120,000 foreign patients annually from 167 countries Ophthalmology / eye-care specialist
Memorial Memorial Hospitals Group 120,000 international patients Premium multi-specialty hospital group
Acıbadem Acıbadem Healthcare Group 60,000+ international patients from 100+ countries in IHH 2025 reporting High-end complex-care and export champion
Medipol Medipol Mega University Hospital, Medipol Global No strong official groupwide number found; third-party profiles cite around 25,000 international patients for Medipol Mega University-hospital and complex-care challenger
Medicana Medicana Health Group No clear public international patient count found; official materials state 4.5 million+ annual total patients Large private hospital network with international growth ambitions

The most transparent international patient numbers are available for Dünyagöz, Memorial, Acıbadem and MedicalPark/MLP Care. Medipol and Medicana are clearly important players, but their public international patient volume data is less complete.

1. MedicalPark / MLP Care: Turkey’s scale player

MedicalPark is one of the most visible hospital brands in Turkey. But in industry terms, it should be understood together with MLP Care, the corporate group behind Medical Park, Liv Hospital, VM Medical Park and related healthcare assets.

MLP Care’s own global network page describes the group as one of Turkey’s largest hospital groups, operating 27 Medical Park hospitals, 10 Liv Hospitals and İstinye Dental Hospital. It also says the group serves patients from more than 200 countries.

For medical tourism volume, MLP Care appears to be one of the largest institutional players in Turkey. Industry coverage published in 2024 cited MLP Care International as having a 450-person international patient team, receiving patients from more than 180 countries, and treating more than 150,000 international patients in the previous year.

MLP Care’s investor materials also show that foreign medical tourism is financially significant, even if the company does not always publish a simple annual international patient count in every report. Its 2024 earnings release reported that foreign medical tourism revenues declined by 9.9% in 2024, and its 2025 integrated annual report reported a further 15.8% decline in FMT revenues in 2025, driven by lower patient numbers and currency effects.

That decline is important. It suggests that even Turkey’s largest private hospital platforms are not immune to changing international demand, pricing pressure, currency dynamics and patient-flow volatility.

MedicalPark / MLP Care’s strength is scale. MedicalPark gives the group broad national reach. Liv Hospital gives it a premium segment. VM Medical Park supports a more modern city-hospital positioning. This multi-brand model allows MLP Care to compete across different patient types: price-sensitive patients, middle-market patients, premium patients and complex-care patients.

Its medical tourism strengths likely include oncology, cardiovascular surgery, orthopedics, organ transplantation, obesity surgery, IVF, diagnostics, general surgery and premium second-opinion services. The key point is not only one specialty. The key point is platform power.

Strategic takeaway: MedicalPark / MLP Care is probably the strongest example of a large-scale Turkish private hospital platform. If the ranking is based on reported international patient volume, it may be the largest among the Big Six.

MedicalPark is one of the most visible hospital brands under MLP Care, Turkey’s largest private hospital platform by network scale.

2. Memorial: the premium Turkish multi-specialty brand

Memorial is one of Turkey’s most recognizable private hospital groups for international patients. It has built a brand around premium care, international quality, transplantation, IVF, oncology, cardiovascular surgery and complex specialties.

Memorial’s official international-facing material states that the group operates 11 hospitals, 2 medical centers and 1 wellness center in five Turkish cities, and serves 75,000 international patients from more than 167 countries annually. Memorial also says it serves 2.4 million patients and performs 85,000 surgeries per year.

A newer Hospitals Magazine profile, published in 2026, cites larger figures: 13 hospitals across two countries, 1,300+ specialist physicians, 8,000+ staff, patients from 190+ countries and 120,000 international patients. Because Memorial’s own official pages still use the 75,000+ figure, the most conservative public number remains 75,000+ international patients annually, while 120,000 can be treated as a newer media-reported figure that may reflect more recent growth or a broader definition.

This distinction matters. In medical tourism, “international patient” can include multiple categories: true medical tourists who travel specifically for treatment, foreign residents, expatriates, emergency tourist-health cases and referral patients. A hospital group may also update its numbers across different marketing channels at different times.

Memorial’s positioning is stronger on value and trust than on being the cheapest option. Its international appeal is especially relevant in complex treatments: organ transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, IVF, oncology, cardiovascular surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery and advanced diagnostics. Memorial’s official presentation also highlights transplant volumes, IVF cycles, cardiovascular procedures and centers of excellence.

Strategic takeaway: Memorial is one of Turkey’s strongest premium multi-specialty medical tourism brands. It is likely among the top players by both patient volume and high-value complex-care positioning.

Memorial has built one of Turkey’s strongest private hospital brands for international patients, with particular strength in transplantation, oncology, IVF and complex surgery.

3. Acıbadem: the export champion and complex-care brand

Acıbadem is one of the most internationally recognized Turkish healthcare brands. It is part of IHH Healthcare, one of the world’s major private healthcare groups, and it has a particularly strong reputation in high-end, complex medical care.

Acıbadem’s own corporate information states that the group provides healthcare services through 30 hospitals and 18 medical centers in five countries, supported by approximately 27,515 employees, including 3,829 doctors and 5,469 nurses.

The international patient numbers are relatively strong and well sourced. IHH’s 2024 annual report says Acıbadem served 55,000 patients from 148 countries. IHH’s 2025 annual report then says that in 2025, Acıbadem served more than 60,000 international patients from more than 100 countries.

Acıbadem also appears to be one of Turkey’s strongest health service exporters by revenue. In the Health Services Exporters Association ranking published in 2025, the top three health services exporters listed were Acıbadem Sağlık Hizmetleri, MLP Sağlık Hizmetleri and İstanbul Memorial Sağlık Yatırımları.

This is the key point: Acıbadem may not be the biggest by international patient volume if compared with MLP Care or Dünyagöz, but it may be one of the strongest by export value, brand prestige and complex-care capability.

Acıbadem’s medical tourism strengths include oncology, robotic surgery, orthopedics and spine, IVF, organ transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, pediatrics and advanced diagnostics. Its international positioning is less about “cheap Turkey surgery” and more about high-trust hospital care with strong clinical infrastructure.

Strategic takeaway: Acıbadem is arguably Turkey’s strongest healthcare export brand. By volume it may rank below MLP Care, Dünyagöz and possibly Memorial, but by prestige, international recognition and complex-care export value, it belongs at the top of the market.

Acıbadem is one of Turkey’s most internationally recognized private healthcare brands, known for complex-care specialties and international patient services.

4. Medipol: the university-hospital challenger

Medipol’s flagship is Medipol Mega University Hospital, one of Turkey’s largest private university hospital complexes. It has built its medical tourism positioning around academic medicine, complex care, advanced technology and multidisciplinary treatment.

Medipol Global’s own international patient page says Medipol Mega University Hospital provides services in 30 languages, with international patient counselors supporting patients in their mother tongue.

Medipol also has a visible international infrastructure. Its official representative offices page lists offices in countries including Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, England, Georgia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Uzbekistan.

The main weakness in Medipol’s public profile is patient-volume transparency. I could not find a strong official groupwide international patient number comparable to Acıbadem, Memorial, MLP Care or Dünyagöz. Some third-party hospital marketplace profiles cite around 25,000 international patients for Medipol Mega, but this should be treated as a third-party estimate rather than a confirmed official group figure.

Medipol’s strongest medical tourism categories appear to be oncology, organ transplantation, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, IVF, dental care and advanced imaging. Its hospital structure gives it a serious advantage for patients who want a large academic hospital rather than a boutique clinic.

Strategic takeaway: Medipol is a serious complex-care player, but its public international patient numbers are less transparent. It belongs in the Big Six because of its hospital scale, academic positioning, international offices and high-acuity treatment capacity.

5. Medicana: the large private network with international ambitions

Medicana is one of Turkey’s large private hospital groups, founded in 1992. It has strong domestic recognition and a broad hospital footprint.

Medicana’s official Turkish website currently lists 19 hospitals, 94 clinical units, 1,300+ doctors, 16,000+ staff and 4.5 million annual average patients.

Another Medicana corporate page states that the group serves patients through hospitals in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Konya, Samsun, Sivas, Bursa, and abroad in Sarajevo and the United Kingdom. It also says the group provides healthcare to more than 4.5 million patients annually from Turkey and different parts of the world.

However, Medicana’s international patient count is not clearly disclosed in the same way as Dünyagöz, Memorial or Acıbadem. The group clearly has medical tourism activity, international branding and a broad treatment portfolio, but a clean public number such as “X international patients per year” was not found in the available official materials.

Medicana’s key specialties include oncology, oncologic surgery, organ transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, neurosurgery, IVF, genetics, cardiovascular surgery, orthopedics and traumatology, and obesity surgery. These are listed in its own corporate material.

Medicana also appears to be investing in health tourism visibility. Its official website reported participation in an international health tourism, trade and tourism summit in December 2025, describing strong interest from domestic and foreign visitors and new global cooperation opportunities.

Strategic takeaway: Medicana is a major private hospital network and belongs in the Big Six by scale and brand presence. But compared with Acıbadem, Memorial, MLP Care and Dünyagöz, its public medical tourism volume data is less transparent.

6. Dünyagöz: the specialty giant of Turkish medical tourism

Dünyagöz is different from the other five. It is not a broad multi-specialty hospital group. It is a specialist ophthalmology group. But that focus is exactly why it matters.

Dünyagöz’s official corporate material says the group serves an average of 120,000 patients annually from 167 foreign countries and has been awarded Turkey’s “500 Top Service Exporter” Certificate of Achievement.

This makes Dünyagöz one of the clearest examples of specialty-led medical tourism success in Turkey. Eye care travels well because many procedures are relatively short, price-comparable and easy to package. LASIK, cataract surgery, trifocal lens surgery, retina treatment, glaucoma care and other ophthalmology procedures can often be evaluated, planned and completed more efficiently than many complex multi-stage treatments.

Dünyagöz also benefits from category clarity. A patient does not need to understand a full hospital ecosystem. The brand is simple: eye care. That simplicity can be a major advantage in cross-border marketing.

In older materials, Dünyagöz cited lower international volumes, such as around 96,000 patients from 107 countries in a 2017 brochure and 110,000 patients from 160 countries in earlier online material. The current official figure of 120,000 from 167 countries suggests long-term growth in its international patient base.

Strategic takeaway: Dünyagöz proves that a focused specialty group can rival or outperform general hospital groups by international patient volume. In ophthalmology, it is arguably Turkey’s most important medical tourism brand.

Ranking the Big Six: volume vs value

The ranking changes depending on what is being measured.

By reported international patient volume

Based on publicly available figures, a reasonable volume-based ranking would look like this:

  1. MedicalPark / MLP Care — industry coverage cites 150,000+ international patients
  2. Dünyagöz — official material cites 120,000 foreign patients annually
  3. Memorial — official material cites 75,000+ annually, while newer media profile cites 120,000
  4. Acıbadem — IHH cites 60,000+ international patients in 2025
  5. Medipol — third-party profiles cite around 25,000 for Medipol Mega, but official groupwide data is unclear
  6. Medicana — major total patient volume, but no clean public international patient number found

This does not mean Medicana is weak. It means its public medical tourism volume data is less transparent.

By export value and complex-care strength

A different ranking is more likely when looking at high-value medical tourism, complex-care reputation and export strength:

  1. Acıbadem
  2. Memorial
  3. MedicalPark / MLP Care
  4. Medipol
  5. Medicana
  6. Dünyagöz

Dünyagöz ranks lower here only because it is a specialty eye-care group, not because it is less successful. In its own category, it may be the strongest of all.

By category dominance

  • Ophthalmology: Dünyagöz
  • Complex multi-specialty care: Acıbadem and Memorial
  • Network scale: MedicalPark / MLP Care
  • University-hospital positioning: Medipol
  • Broad private hospital coverage: Medicana

What the Big Six reveal about Turkey’s medical tourism market

The Big Six show that Turkish medical tourism is no longer just a low-cost procedure market. It is becoming a layered industry.

At the first layer are high-volume elective treatments: hair transplantation, dentistry, aesthetics, bariatric surgery and eye surgery. These categories are price-sensitive and heavily marketed online.

At the second layer are complex medical treatments: oncology, organ transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, IVF and advanced diagnostics. These require more institutional trust, stronger hospital infrastructure and deeper international patient coordination.

The Big Six compete across both layers, but not equally. Dünyagöz dominates a focused specialty. MedicalPark / MLP Care leads through network scale. Acıbadem and Memorial compete strongly in premium complex care. Medipol combines academic medicine with international patient services. Medicana has the scale and treatment breadth, but needs clearer public medical tourism data to be evaluated more precisely.

The other lesson is transparency. Some groups publish clear international patient numbers. Others publish total patient numbers, country reach, hospital count or international office infrastructure, but not medical tourism volume. For investors, facilitators, insurers and international patients, the next stage of market maturity will require more transparent reporting: patient origin, treatment category, revenue mix, outcomes, satisfaction and follow-up data.

Conclusion

The Big Six of Turkish medical tourism — Acıbadem, Memorial, MedicalPark/MLP Care, Medipol, Medicana and Dünyagöz — represent the institutional backbone of Turkey’s international patient market.

Together, they show the different ways a healthcare brand can win in medical tourism. MLP Care wins through scale. Dünyagöz wins through specialty focus. Memorial wins through premium multi-specialty trust. Acıbadem wins through export strength and complex-care reputation. Medipol wins through university-hospital credibility. Medicana wins through domestic scale and broad treatment capacity.

The future of Turkish medical tourism will not be defined only by cheaper procedures. It will be defined by which hospital groups can combine medical quality, international trust, transparent outcomes, patient coordination and brand credibility.

In that race, the Big Six are not just hospital groups. They are the companies shaping Turkey’s global healthcare brand.
